청춘 (YOUTH)

 

 

YOUTH(청춘) 지은이 : 미국 Samuel Ullman(1840~19240) 70세에 씀 맥카더(Douglas Mac Arthur) 애송시 Youth is not a time: it is a start of mind: it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees: it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions: it is the freshness of the deep spring of life. 청춘이란 인생의 어떤 한 시기가 아니라, 마음의 상태입니다. 그것은 장미 빛 뺨, 붉은 입술 그리고 유연한 무릎의 문제가 아니고, 차라리 의지의 문제이며, 질 높은 상상력과 열정적인 감정이 있느냐의 문제이다. 청춘은 인생의 깊은 샘물에서 나오는 신선함과 같은 것이다. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy twenty, Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. 청춘이란 쾌락을 찾기 보담 과감히 버릴 수 있는 열정적인 용기와, 편안함을 추구하기 보다는 모험을 즐길 수 있는 열정을 의미한다. 이런 것 들은 가끔 20세 청년에서 보다 60세의 성인에서 발견되곤 한다. 우리는 단순히 나이에 의해서 늙은 것이 아니고, 이상을 버릴 때 비로소 늙은 것이다. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul, Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. 세월은 살결에 주름살을 만들지는 모르나, 열정을 포기하면 영혼에 주름살이 만들어지는 것이다. 두려움, 공포, 자기불신은 우리의 심장을 굴복하게 하며 영롱한 정신을 보잘 것 없는 먼지로 만들어 버린다. Whether sixty or sixteen. there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. in the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and lnfinite, so long are you young. 60세든 16살이든 모든 인간의 가슴에는 경이로움에 대한 유혹과, 미지에 대한 천진하고 끝없는 욕구, 그리고 삶의 전개 에 대한 즐거움이 있다. 너와 나의 가슴에는 하나의 무선 교신 국이 있다. 그 교신 국이 아름다운, 희망. 즐거운, 용기, 그리고 힘의 영감을 인간과 영원의 세계로부터 받아들이고 있는 한, 우리는 언제나 젊은 것이다.
